Bethesda-by-the-Sea is the island's parish church and one of its most serious pieces of architecture. The Episcopal congregation dates to January 1889 and the Little Red Schoolhouse; the present Gothic Revival church, by the New York firm Hiss and Weekes, held its first service on Christmas Day 1926.
The building surrounds a courtyard, with the Cluett Memorial Garden behind it, and its stone tower is a fixed point of the Midtown skyline. The church is open to visitors, with regular tours, and its Christmas and Easter calendars are part of the season itself.
