The Everglades Club

The Everglades Club is the building that started everything at this end of the island. Paris Singer began construction in July 1918 as the Touchstone Convalescent Club, a hospital for wounded of the First World War; the war ended first, and the club opened instead on 25 January 1919, to Addison Mizner's designs.

Its consequences outran its walls. Mizner's Mediterranean Revival became the island's architectural language, and the shops that grew around the club turned a road into Worth Avenue. The club is private and closed to the public: it is listed here as the landmark it is, seen from the street.
