The Paramount is the island's great surviving piece of Jazz Age showmanship: a movie house designed by the Austrian architect Joseph Urban, opened in 1927, closed as a cinema in 1980 and converted to offices and retail in the 1980s. The town designated it a landmark in 1982.
Its next act is being written now. In January 2026 the Town Council approved, three votes to two, a plan by owners Lester and Trent Woerner, who bought the building in 2021 for 14 million dollars, to convert it into a 175-member private club with a cafe, retail space and its church tenant retained. It is the town's liveliest current argument about what preservation means.
