The Plaza is Palm Beach's mid-century counterweight to Worth Avenue. The Phipps family commissioned the architect John Volk in 1957 with a brief he liked to quote, a shopping plaza in any style you wish, but it must endure for fifty years. Volk delivered arcades, terrazzo and two planted courtyards; F.A.O. Schwartz took space, and Gucci opened its first store outside New York here.
A restoration completed in 2017 returned the metalwork and terrazzo and rebuilt the tenant mix around fashion, food and design. Today it functions as the island's daytime social center, and its courtyards are where the town actually sits down.
